One of the joys of being young is experimenting and taking risks, and that’s exactly what winemakers in Mexico’s nascent Valle de Guadalupe are doing, often to great success.
A line of sparkling wines from Casa de Piedra, the flagship label from celebrated Valle winemaker Hugo D’Acosta, epitomizes this devil-may-care spirit.
In Champagne and regions around the world where sparkling is produced, the only three grapes used (alone or in blends) are chardonnay, pinot meunier and pinot noir.
The Espuma de Piedra Blanc de Blancs? It’s 50 percent chardonnay, 50 percent sauvignon blanc and 100 percent rebellious deliciousness.
With soft aromas and flavors of warm, buttered brioche and toasted nuts buoyed by big, sturdy bubbles, this is a luscious, complex and surprising wine.
“Blinded, I would not know this is not from Champagne, let alone guess it to be a Mexican sparkler. Bravo,” said one online reviewer.
On a recent trip to the Valle de Guadalupe, we popped open the Espuma for a pre-dinner toast and enjoyed the last sips with our first bites of succulent super-fresh Baja camarones. But it could have easily worked with any of the courses to come — the sign of a quality sparkling wine.
The winery also produces a blanc de noir (from zinfandel) and sparkling rosé (from barbera). I look forward to trying those rule-defying bottles. And at about $23 for any of the Espumas, it wouldn’t be such a big risk to take.
